Resumo De acordo com a visão tradicional do processo de formação de preços, estes resultam das interações entre oferta e demanda. Um preço de equilíbrio é aquele no qual as quantidades demandadas se igualam às quantidades ofertadas. O sistema de preços fornece um mecanismo por meio do qual mudanças nas condições de oferta e demanda condicionam a eficiência alocativa dos recursos. No entanto, em grande medida, os preços não são determinados no mercado pela oferta e demanda nessa acepção estrita, mas por outros fatores como poder, estruturas de mercado, convenções, regras, rotinas etc. O propósito deste artigo é investigar o papel e a influência de uma variedade de instituições no processo de formação de preços, com particular ênfase nas convenções.

Abstract According to the traditional view of price formation, prices are the result of the interactions of supply and demand. An equilibrium price is one where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. The price system provides a mechanism whereby changes in supply and demand conditions affect the allocative efficiency of resources. However, in an important measure, prices are not completely determined in the market by supply and demand, but by other factors such as power, market structures, conventions, rules, routines etc. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role and influence of a variety of institutions in the pricing process, with particular emphasis on conventions.

RESUMO O presente artigo dedica-se ao exame de algumas das principais interpretações de inspiração marxista acerca da Grande Recessão que se apresentam publicadas sob a forma de livros. Do amplo conjunto de publicações sobre o tema, as seguintes obras foram analisadas: The Great Financial Crisis, de John Bellamy Foster e Fred Magdoff (2009); The Enigma of Capital, de David Harvey (2011), publicada originalmente em 2010; The Crisis of Neoliberalism, de Gérard Duménil e Dominique Lévy (2011); e The Failure of Capitalist Production, de Andrew Kliman (2012). Argumenta-se que o debate marxista em torno das causas últimas da Grande Recessão pode ser sistematizado a partir da seguinte clivagem: 1) de um lado, os autores que atribuem a turbulência à forma política/econômica/institucional específica assumida pelo sistema capitalista ao longo das últimas décadas; 2) de outro, aqueles que interpretam a crise recente como uma manifestação própria da dinâmica capitalista em geral - e não do modo particular que esta supostamente apresenta. Enquanto Foster e Magdoff (2009), Harvey (2011) e Duménil e Lévy (2011) compõem o primeiro grupo, Kliman (2012) pode ser visto como representante da segunda vertente.

ABSTRACT This review paper examines some of the main Marxist-inspired interpretations of the Great Recession that were published in the form of books. From the broad set of publications on the subject, the following works were analyzed: The Great Financial Crisis, by John Bellamy Foster and Fred Magdoff (2009); The Enigma of Capital, by David Harvey (2011), originally published in 2010; The Crisis of Neoliberalism, by Gérard Duménil and Dominique Lévy (2011); and The Failure of Capitalist Production, by Andrew Kliman (2012). It is argued that the Marxist debate about the ultimate causes of the Great Recession can be systematized from the following cleavage: 1) on the one hand, the authors who attribute the turbulence to the specific political/economic/institutional form assumed by the capitalist system over the last decades; 2) on the other hand, those who interpret the recent crisis as a manifestation of capitalist dynamics in general - and not the particular form that it supposedly assumes. While Foster and Magdoff (2009), Harvey (2011) and Duménil and Lévy (2011) belong to the first group, Kliman (2012) is a representative of the second strand.

O artigo discute os determinantes da taxa de câmbio em uma economia monetária periférica, com base em uma perspectiva teórica centrada na economia política keynesiana. Para tal, analisam-se inicialmente as propriedades essenciais de uma economia monetária aberta e, na sequência, apresentam-se as proposições básicas da visão pós-keynesiana da determinação da taxa de câmbio, desenvolvida principalmente por John Harvey, o qual, no entanto, não discute as causas específicas do comportamento da taxa de câmbio em economias periféricas "emergentes". Por fim, após reexaminar a ideia de "condição periférica", o texto discute as peculiaridades históricas e institucionais associadas ao modo de inserção das economias periféricas no sistema monetário e financeiro internacional moderno.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss, from a Keynesian analytical perspective, the determination of exchange rates in a peripheral monetary economy. Initially, the paper approaches the essential properties of an open monetary economy. Next, it presents the basic proposals of the Post Keynesian view of exchange rate determination, which was developed chiefly by John Harvey, who, nevertheless, does not discuss the specific causes of exchange rates behaviour in "emerging" peripheral economies. Finally, after re-examining the idea of "peripheral condition," the paper approaches the historical and institutional peculiarities associated with the way in which peripheral economies are integrated in the modern international monetary and financial system.

O objetivo deste artigo é discutir o conceito de incerteza através da reconstituição das formas como o mesmo aparece nas versões de Knight, Keynes, Shackle e Davidson. O artigo procura se concentrar nas peculiaridades de cada uma destas abordagens da noção de incerteza. É indubitável que as teorias da incerteza destes autores apresentam paralelismo e afinidades significativas. Ainda que estes vários tratamentos comunguem de uma ênfase na diferença conceitual entre risco (probabilístico) e incerteza, assim como no aspecto da não mensurabilidade, suas abordagens e realces na conceituação da incerteza são distintos. Diante disso, o artigo compara e contrasta estas análises, concentrando-se nos aspectos que lhe são únicos e singulares. Foi a partir da visão "clássica" de incerteza de Knight, Keynes, Shackle e Davidson que se pode construir a hoje já consolidada visão "moderna" do "princípio da incerteza", irreversivelmente enraizada em boa parte do pensamento econômico heterodoxo.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the uncertainty concept through a reconstitution of the ways in which this notion emerges in the works by Knight, Keynes, Shackle and Davidson. It focuses on the uniqueness of each approach. It is unquestionable that these authors' theories of uncertainty have meaningful resemblances. Nevertheless, although all these treatments share an emphasis on the conceptual distinction between (probabilistic) risk and uncertainty, as well as on their immeasurability, it is fair to say that these authors' approaches to the conceptualisation of uncertainty are distinctive in many respects. Thus, the paper evaluates and contrasts their analyses, concentrating on their peculiarities. It was from this "classical" view of uncertainty (Knight, Keynes, Shackle and Davidson) that a "modern" approach to uncertainty could originally be constructed and further developed, and it is now rooted in current heterodox approaches.

A master in the periphery of capitalism. Maria da Conceição Tavares is an eminent figure in Brazilian economic thought, especially in heterodox circles. She has tackled various issues, such as underdevelopment, from the perspective of a "critique of political economy". The purpose of this article is to identify the main theoretical references, as well as the methodological stance, in Tavares's works, by revisiting the author's critical dialogue with some strands of Political Economy. Although Tavares's work sets up a dialogue with various economists, the paper will focus on her interpretation of Marx, Keynes and Kalecki, whose ideas are of utmost importance for the construction of her analytical framework.

RESUMO Este artigo aborda o que chamo de keynesianismo filosófico, mapeando suas origens históricas e analíticas e apontando suas perspectivas como uma referência alternativa. Seu surgimento histórico está relacionado a alguns resultados de pesquisas teóricas e metodológicas da escola pós-keynesiana de pensamento econômico. Uma suposição é feita sobre o lugar apropriado que o keynesianismo filosófico terá no futuro, pois seu escopo de investigação está se tornando muito mais abrangente e inclusivo do que a escola econômica que o gerou. O artigo revisa algumas das principais contribuições desse novo campo de investigação, como os livros de Carabelli, O’Donnell e Davis. Ele também procura reforçar o caso de que, como é bastante claro na abordagem de Keynes à teorização econômica, a economia deve ser vista como uma ciência moral e sócio-histórica, e não como uma ciência natural, e que um estudo mais realista e relevante da economia fenômenos devem ser baseados em algum tipo de pesquisa interdisciplinar.

ABSTRACT This paper addresses what I label Philosophical Keynesianism, mapping out its historical and analytical origins and pointing out its perspectives as an alternative benchmark. Its historical emergence is related to some theoretical and methodological research results within the post-Keynesian school of economic thought. An assumption is made as to the proper place Philosophical Keynesianism will have in the future, for its scope of investigation is becoming much more comprehensive and inclusive than the economic school which engendered it. The paper reviews some major contributions of this new field of inquiry, such as the books of Carabelli, O’Donnell and Davis. It also seeks to reinforce the case that, as it is quite clear from Keynes’ approach to economic theorizing, economics should be seen as a moral and socio-historical science rather than a natural science, and that a more realistic and relevant study of economic phenomena should be grounded on some sort of interdisciplinary research.
